Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for- ___41___(it) stadium, theatres, shops and restuarants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2,000 years.

Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It ___42___ (lie) at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano. Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for ___43___ (century), so the people of Pompeii felt that they were in ___44___ (safe).

In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, ___45___ a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ashes began to fall on Pompeii. When theeruption ended two days later, Pompeii ___46___(bury) under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.

From then on, Pompeii remained under stones and ashes. Then an Italian scientist ___47___ (name) Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. ___48___ (slow) and carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, house and shops. There was a stadium ___49___ 20,000 seats.
